Coal ash is one of the largest industrial waste streams in the United States. With the recent problems with waste disposal sites, environmental engineers have redoubled their efforts to find new reuse opportunities for coal ash. PhD student Ross Taggart of the Hsu-Kim lab just published a paper evaluating the potential to use coal ash as a source of rare earth metals. Check out this summary from the Pratt communications team and Ross's article in Environmental Science & Technology (10.1021/acs.est.6b00085). His first! Nice one Ross!
