Bass Connections in Madre de Dios, Peru

June 19, 2018

The first of this summer's Bass Connections team in Madre de Dios (Peru) got off to a great start earlier this month. The team includes Duke students Axel Berky, Emily Robie, Jamie Harris, Emma Palmer, and Eliza LeTourneau, and is traveling around this region of southeastern Peru for summer field research in the tropics! Their research goals are to assess potential associations between pollutant metal exposure and anemia incidence among community residents as well as to evaluate levels of mercury, lead, and other metals in fish and water in the region. The first stop for the team was Shintuya, a town located on the upper reaches of the Madre de Dios River.
