Facilities

The Hsu-Kim research group shares the laboratory facilities of the Environmental Process Engineering group in CEE at Duke. These facilities, located in Hudson Hall, include wet and dry laboratories for research on a range of physical, chemical and microbiological processes in water, air and soil domains. During 2005-2006, more than 3500 sq. ft. of laboratory space was renovated for the Environmental Engineering group. Part of the new renovations includes a dedicated trace metal room for our research on mercury biogeochemistry.

We employ a number of instrumental analyses for our research activities. Analytical capabilities in our laboratory include:

  • Cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometer
  • Mercury combustion gold amalgamation atomic absorption spectrometer
  • High performance liquid chromatograph with UV and fluorescence detectors
  • Mercury-gold amalgam solid state microelectrodes
  • Hanging mercury-drop electrode and polarograph
  • Inductively couple plasma - optical emission spectrometer
